Chapter Nine

Wade sat beside the sheriff in a clean, crisp boardroom. All eyes were on him. He could see their questions on their faces, wondering who he was and why he was there.

He wasn’t even completely sure the answer to the last part was himself.

Wade glanced over his shoulder and met Penn’s stare. Penn stood a couple of feet away, against the side wall. He hadn’t been offered a seat at the table, but likely knew more about the current issue they were about to discuss.

Declan glanced around the filling board table. Mattheu had told him these men were the alpha’s most trusted advisors. Wade looked over each one, stunned to think they were all bear shifters. Doctors, councilmen, officers… even though he’d heard there was a whole town run by these… shifters… it still seemed so surreal.

While at the same time, feeling so normal. How many of these tables had he sat around in communities all over the state discussing animal control or poaching issues?

“What’s he doing here?” one of the males asked, glaring at Penn.

Wade looked over his shoulder and saw Penn glaring back.

“That will be explained in time,” Declan said. “Everyone, find a seat. We’ve got business to discuss.”

The table packed quickly, and everyone grew quiet.

“I can’t believe we’re back to face this same issue. But it seems we have another werewolf problem,” Declan said.

“I thought the elders were going to take care of their own?” a large man who looked very much like the alpha asked from Declan’s right.

“They did. And as far as I can tell, they are. These werewolves aren’t natives. The elders might not have a say in the new packs forming off rez,” Mattheu said. “But I plan to head up there after this meeting to find out their take.”

Declan pointed at Wade. “This is Wade Travers. He’s a game warden with the state. He had a run-in with the werewolves, and I wanted him to relay what he saw. I figured I might as well bring you all in so we can get this done in one fell swoop.”

All stares turned to Wade.

“I was called by the Vernon County Ranger service to help investigate some odd killings on their northern borders—which bump up against the vineyard just south of here. I went with one of the locals and found a scene of carnage. The ranger said he’d found others—and that they were escalating. There were dozens of small animals ripped apart, left in various stages of mutilation, and… there were odd tracks I’d never seen before. I thought they were wolf, but then, no wolf I’d ever seen in the area.” Wade paused to take a deep breath. “I asked the ranger about the vineyard and farm—and he went funny.”

“Funny how?” Declan asked.

“His eyes rolled back in his head, and he said to beware the bears and to stay away from those lands. When he came to—he acted as if he didn’t remember a word. He said he had a headache and felt funny, but didn’t remember what he’d just done.
